In late fall of 2007, I was looking for a work from home opportunity. I wanted a well known company that had products that appealed to a broad range of people.
In my typical geeky way (and yes, I admit to being a geek), I started researching the ingredients in the products so I could speak authentically if anyone had a question. As a skin care hobbyist, I had made my share of facial cremes, body baths and lotion so I had a fairly good idea of what should be in skin care.
What I found was a long string of ingredients that I literally needed a dictionary to decipher. While federal law requires the use of the INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients
) names on all ingredient lists, most companies list the ingredients by their common names as well. At least, the companies that claim they use natural ingredients do. But as I read ingredient label after ingredient label, I came to the conclusion that the products I would be selling had very little to do with nature and a lot to do with chemicals.
Even more alarming was what my research turned up on the most common chemicals used in everyday skin care - even in baby products! Recent scientific studies have raised concerns regarding the safety of ingredients such as sodium laurel sulfate and parabens. While there is no "smoking gun" causational relationship established yet, the concerns raised by these studies should have everyone taking a closer look at what they are putting on their skin.
After some extensive research, I decided I could not, in all good conscience, represent this skin care company. I began my search for a company that offered products that at least had a nodding acquaintance with nature. Many companies stated they used natural ingredients but refused to publish their ingredient list on their websites. Others did publish their ingredient list but the natural ingredients were low on the list (indicates volume used).
I then realized that there wasn't a company out there who offered truly natural products in a direct selling format. So, Ayela International was born.
